SUMMARY:
James S. Andersen, MD, is an expert in reconstructive surgery of the breast, reconstructive microsurgery and in the management of complex deformities of the Head and Neck, Extremities, Thorax and Perineum. He has developed a new surgical procedure for reconstruction of the nipple and areola that provides lasting aesthetic quality to his patients. His research interests include evaluation of the safety and efficacy of cohesive silicone gel-filled breast implants used in breast reconstruction (multicenter studies).
In association with oncologic surgeons at the City of Hope, Dr. Andersen has achieved superior quality results in reconstructive surgery of the breast by utilizing tissue-sparing techniques for mastectomy combined with microsurgical tissue transplantation. These techniques have been further refined by Dr. Andersen to minimize recovery time and maximize function in many patients. This combination of procedures allows certain patients to obtain results with a minimum of visible scarring.
Following graduation from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Dr. Andersen received his general surgery and plastic surgery training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was also a Research Fellow in the Harrison Department of Surgical Research in the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He obtained further specialized training in microsurgical procedures as a Microsurgery Fellow at the University of Southern California. He is Board Certified in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, and he is a Fellow of the AmericanCollege of Surgeons.
Dr. Andersen has presented diverse talks at local and national meetings as well as being involved with numerous publications. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of
Southern California and his practice incorporates a full-time senior level resident in plastic surgery. He has received the annual teaching award three times from the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Southern California given by the senior residents.
