SUMMARY:
Laura Crocitto is a urologic surgeon who spends time both in the clinic and the research laboratory. As a full-time faculty member with the Division of Surgery at City of Hope, Dr. Crocitto coordinates research efforts for the Department of Urology focusing on bladder and prostate cancer. In addition, she is assisting in the development of a multidisciplinary approach for the management of prostate cancer patients.
Dr. Crocitto has recently accepted a joint appointment in the Department of Cell and Tumor Biology. She is leading a research project to develop a new screening test for prostate cancer based upon the detection of telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein complex present in prostate cancer tumors. Early results indicate that this test may be better able to predict who has prostate cancer and therefore, to determine who should be advised to go on to a transrectal ultrasound and biopsy versus those who can avoid this biopsy.
Dr. Crocitto obtained her medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine in 1989. Her urology training was also completed at Los Angeles/USC Medical Center. During her fellowship she completed one year of clinical training under the direction of Donald G. Skinner, MD at USC/Norris Cancer Center and two years of basic laboratory research with Jerry Coetzee, PhD at USC. Dr. Crocitto is board-certified in urology.
